Pliers, side cutters, T-bars, filleting and bait knives, disgorgers and gloves. Boat fishing is hard on tools and hard on hands, so it’s worth having the right ones and keeping them where you can reach them.

Tools On The Deck

A long T-bar or a decent pair of pliers keeps your fingers away from conger, bass and anything else with opinions. A sharp bait knife and a board make up traces and baits quickly, and a filleting knife is worth having if you’re taking fish for the table — most skippers will let you sort your fish on the way in. Rinse everything in fresh water at the end of the day and oil the hinges now and then, because salt seizes tools within a couple of trips otherwise.
