Lures for pike, perch and zander — big soft shads and swimbaits for pike, jerkbaits and spinnerbaits, smaller paddletails and crankbaits for perch, plus the jig heads and weights to fish them on. Freshwater predators are as fun on lures as anything in the sea.

Choosing A Predator Lure

Size is the first decision and it is mostly about the fish you want. Pike will happily take a lure the length of your hand, and a big soft shad worked slowly along a drop-off in winter is about as reliable as predator fishing gets. Perch want something far smaller — a two or three inch paddletail on a light jig head accounts for a huge number of them. Spinnerbaits and jerkbaits earn their place in coloured water and around snags, where a bit of flash and vibration helps fish find the lure. Use a wire trace on all of it, because a pike will take a perch lure without hesitation.
