Pliers, forceps, braid scissors, hook sharpeners, unhooking mats and lure retrievers — the tools that make a session easier and get fish back in the water quickly. Salt water is hard on cheap tools, so we stock ones that will still open and close after a winter of being dunked and dropped on shingle.

Tools Worth Carrying

A pair of long-nosed pliers or forceps should live in your bag permanently. They get hooks out of a fish cleanly, they get hooks out of you rather more comfortably than the alternative, and they make changing split rings a five second job. Braid scissors are the other one people underestimate — ordinary scissors chew braid rather than cut it and you’ll be fighting your leader knots all evening. Give everything a rinse and a spray of light oil now and then and it’ll all keep working.
