Headtorches, lanterns and clip-on lights for short winter days and early starts. Predator sessions often begin and end in the dark at this time of year, and unhooking a pike by phone light is not something you want to do twice.

Light Where You Need It

Get a headtorch that leaves both hands free and gives you a decent, steady beam — unhooking a predator safely needs proper light, and that’s the main argument for a good one. A red mode is useful for moving about without ruining your night vision, and a small lantern on the bank makes rig work far easier. Cold flattens batteries fast, so carry spares or a charged backup, and clip a small light somewhere on your bag so you can find it when you put it down.
